About Ajax

Ajax was established in 1975 by an ex-Hotpoint engineer who saw a gap in the domestic spares & appliance market in the Ipswich area. The shop originally started in Queen Street with just one engineer working on small appliances and one man working the counter. By the early 1980’s Ajax had soon outgrown the premises in Queen Street and looked to move to a bigger store within the town centre, Ajax settled into its new home number 2 St Nicholas Street. Ajax’s business grew steady over the years selling spares accessories and a small selection of vacuums and also expanding throughout East Anglia with shops in Bury ST Edmunds and Colchester. It wasn’t until 1996 that things would change and Ajax would further expand its range of domestic appliances by opening 4 St Nicholas Street as a dedicated showroom selling all types of domestic appliances from irons and kettles to cookers and washing machines.
